The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) enforces strict cargo securement regulations under 49 CFR Part 393, Subpart I, specifically 49 CFR § 393.120, which governs the securement of metal coils. These rules apply to any metal coil shipment weighing 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg) or more, and they carry real consequences for non-compliance: roadside violations, out-of-service orders, fines, and increased CSA scores that can affect your operating authority.

Coils transported with the eye crosswise or lengthwise must use a means (such as timbers, chocks, wedges, or a cradle) to prevent rolling, and that means must support the coil off the deck
Tiedowns must be positioned as close as practicable to the eye of the coil and arranged to prevent them from slipping or becoming unintentionally unfastened during transit
Edge protection is mandatory at any contact point where a tiedown runs over a sharp or abrasive surface that could damage or weaken the chain or strap
